As believers in the western church, we have the privilege of going into a church and fellowshipping freely whenever we want to. However there are people in different parts of the world where going into a church to fellowship is literally put their life in danger every time. These underground churches are filled with people who are on fire for God and have a hunger for his word. Even though they face persecution on a daily basis, they move forward no matter what.
The church was birthed through persecution, however what satan planned for evil, God turned around for good and he even used the church’s biggest persecutor at the time to become the church’s greatest promoter, the Apostle Paul.
Paul is a great example of a person that moved forward no matter what. Not only did Paul have to deal with the physical attacks on his body, but because of what he had done in the past, he had to deal with emotional attacks on his mind.
Act 22:4 I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering to prison both men and women,
Act 26:11 And I punished them often in all the synagogues and tried to make them blaspheme, and in raging fury against them I persecuted them even to foreign cities.
1Co 15:9 For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
Gal 1:13 For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it.
How many times are you attacked in your mind because of previous mistakes you have made and how many times does someone try to make you feel guilty because of it? People will always talk and your mind will always be attacked, so we need to understand that we cannot stop birds from flying over our heads, but we can stop them from nesting on our heads. This is why the bible says:
Rom 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Our minds need to be renewed so that we can move forward no matter what. The enemy tries to bring up our past so that he can stop us from moving forward towards our future. So we need to be able to understand what is going on, so that when he does that, we are able to place the attack before God and ask for his guidance, which will then give us the victory and in doing that, it will remind satan of his future, which is defeat.
This is how people move forward through great persecution, it is not by their might nor by their power but it is by the Holy Spirit working through them.
The early church suffered immensely as the gospel was being spread; history records, the Emperor Nero used to light up his gardens with the bodies of burning Christians. Yet through all of this the Christians move forward no matter what and the persecution made them stronger.
The hotter the battle the more the gospel spread.
The other attack on the church was through religiousness and false doctrine getting people to pervert the word, and we time called the Dark Ages and the time of the reformation were if you were standing up for the truth, you would killed and classed as a blasphemer. Yet through this period, there was a remnant of people that were moving forward no matter what.
Joh 8:31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, "If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,
Joh 8:32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
Once a person as been exposed to the truth and has taken it onboard, they will endure whatever comes at them because they know they are free, even if they are behind bars. This was the knowledge the earlier church had.
Today there are many people in the church that may not behind physical bars, but they are still in bondage because they may go to a building every week, but the church is not in them, so they get caught up in the religious exercise of attending church service but never really operate in the power God has exposed them to through his Holy Spirit, that would cause them to be over comers. So there is a remnant of people who move forward no matter what and then the rest of the people that go through then circle of inspiration, then stagnation. They hear a message, get challenged by it, never study the word to get a deeper understanding, so their minds are not properly renewed, then slip right back to how they were before.
Jesus is coming back for his Church:
Hear the warning from John the Baptise
Mat 3:11 "I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Mat 3:12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."
When building anything in life you have to be prepared to move forward no matter what. This is because anything worth building is going to be challenging. People will try to fight you down about it and people will even try to rubbish it.
You have to be completely sold out to what you are doing or else you will just quit.
You have to defeat your biggest enemy, which is your mind as this enemy knows all about your past failures, your fears and your insecurities and this enemy will use them to attack you as you are building.
However once you have defeated this enemy, you are well on your way to changing not just your life but the lives of many other people.
